Chapter 9
Nate
* * *
Nate let his feet slip off his desk and slam to the floor as he sat straight up in his chair. The hair on the back of his neck began to bristle. Heâd just connected his brotherâs call when Milo skipped past hello and went straight forâ¦
âIâm sorry.â His brother shouted into the phone.
Nate had a tingling feeling that he wasnât going to like the reason Milo was sorry. âWhat did you do?â
âItâs not so much me, as Kiersten. I told her about Rylee, and sheâs cleared our calendar for the weekend. We should be there this afternoon. She wants to meet Rylee and no amount of talking would convince her to just wait until the wedding.â
Nate let his head drop back against his chair. What was he going to do? Rylee couldnât meet his family, because she had no idea who or what he really was.
âNate, say something. Listen, donât worry, weâll stay in a hotel. You donât have to put us up at your house.â Milo tried to make his impromptu visit better, but where they were going to stay was the least of Nateâs problems.
Scrubbing a hand down his face he heaved a great sigh. This is what his good deed had come to. âNo. Thatâs ridiculous, you can stay with me. Thereâs more than enough room.â
âYouâre sure? We wonât be cramping your style or anything?â
Nate chuckled even as he tried to spin a solution to keep his family away from Rylee. âI think that terminology went out in the eighties. And no, you wonât be an imposition. I just wishâ¦â
âI know, brother. Iâm sorry, but I promise, weâll just be in and out.â Milo really did sound apologetic. âI thought Iâd convinced her to wait till the wedding, but then this morning, she announced we were leaving after breakfast.â
Nate groaned. Rylee wasnât ready to know all of him. It was too early in their relationship. If she found out now, it would kill any chance he had of a future with her. Wait, did Milo say they were leaving after breakfast? âThat means youâll be hereâ¦â
âAround five this afternoon. But the good news is we have to be back home Monday. So just for the weekend. A quick trip in and out. Youâll hardly know weâre there.â
This wasnât good. His relationship with Rylee was at a tender place. She wasnât ready for everything he offered.
âSo dinner tonight at Delmonicoâs?â his brother asked.
Even though their visit could cause disaster in his life, he was looking forward to seeing them. And then Nate realized that was true. Heâd left his country to get away from them, and now he didnât mind seeing them. His brows furrowed in confusion. âSure. Thatâs fine, around seven?â
âExcellent.â
Nate would still be at work when they got in, and he certainly didnât want them stopping by his shop. But Milo knew the drill. In Denver, he was Nate. âIâll have Ian get in touch with your security and heâll see you get in my house and anything else you might need.
